King of the Hill is set in Arlen, Texas. Although the town of Arlen is entirely fictional, the culture, locale and characters resonate with viewers, thanks to research conducted by its creators. It was probably based on Garland, Texas, Garland being the hometown of Judge. This makes Arlen a suburb of Dallas, which makes sense because in one episode a former Dallas Cowboys player moves to Arlen. Characters in the series make mention to Austin and Houston as if they are located nearby. In a 1995 interview prior to the show's debut, Judge described the setting as "a town like Humble." Like most fictional towns, the basis for the town does not originate from one specific place.
